Greens Update - May 2024 (2)
Hi all!
It’s been pleasing this week to see the greens push on as they are starting to fill in nicely. We took advantage of a wet day to apply a bit of dressing to the greens to help smooth them out a bit. There is a lot of work still to be carried out on the greens surfaces but they are coming on nicely. When the verticutting mower comes back from repair we will embark on a regular groom/verticut/scarify regime, along with light dustings of dressing to hopefully smooth them out even further.
Our attention now turns to the tees, collars and approaches, which are badly in need of refinement. Now that we have our own grinding equipment, we can invest more time on bringing them up to a decent level, through the same tasks listed above. This will take time, however it is very necessary to carry out this work in order to bring them up to speed.
We have started already though, by bringing the height right down on the approaches so we can try and remove as much of the old thick rye grass that is currently giving a poor surface. By continually brushing, dressing and cutting this, it should start to become a better surface.
It has been a very busy week on the course, with one men’s competition and four ladies events. And with being short staffed at the minute, time is precious on the course, and so we are trying to complete as many tasks as possible. However, there are many jobs still outstanding, so please stay patient as we try and work our way through the list, as well as try and improve the surfaces at the same time.
The new tee on the second hole was worked on this week, with new soil being added to the level required. Final levelling work will be carried out soon before turf is added. Also, the wildflower areas at the 2nd and the 18th have started to sprout! It’s early days yet but the initial signs are encouraging.
In terms of staff news, last year at this time we had six full time staff. We currently have four, with Andy now returning twice a week to cut rough. However, we have taken on a new, and very keen, apprentice who will start in a month’s time. The search for a more experienced and qualified member of the team continues and we will update when there is more news on this.
Enjoy your golf, everyone!
